teacher rant.....

math is not exactly ashton's favorite subject. but, she tolerates it, and works hard at it. her 7th grade math teacher told us that ashton does extremely well, but only because of her work ethic. what a nice compliment!

this year for her freshman year, she is taking geometry. (she took high school algebra 1 last year as an 8th grader). whenever someone asked her what her class schedule was, they all said oh, lucky you, you get to deal with ms. h. (the geometry teacher) and then they would go on to tell me the problems they had when their kids took her class. one of the stories was that she would start the class, give them their assignment, and then go to her car and smoke for the next 15 mins. then she would come back and yell at the class because they didn't understand their assignment. um, hello!

well, ashton has been struggling so far this year. she works on her geometry at least an hour every night. this year, our school district got new math books and there is a website that you can go to and have someone re-teach you the lesson that the teacher taught in class that day. as parents, we love that! how many of you remember your high school math? (or want to!) so, she goes to the website also every night. and, i should mention, that her friends are also struggling-except the one that has a math professor as a father-lucky!

she had a test on thursday. when i picked her up, she thought she had done okay. well, they got them back today--she got a 53%. ouch. she said that in the whole 9th grade, there were only 5 As. after handing back the tests, ms. h. tells the class that she really doesn't care if they fail her class because she will still be able to sleep at night.

this totally infuriates me! as a parent and as a taxpayer. that is her job as a teacher to make sure her students learn-not just go to class every day and teach and then who cares if they understand it.

i am thinking that this justifies an email to the principal. number one to complain and number two to ask for his help with a tutor. we don't want to continue at this rate the rest of the school year.

what is your opinion on this?

I'd try the teacher first. Even if she is saying things like that in class, her attitude should be more helpful with a parent contacting her. (I'm always thrilled when a parent shows they actually care about what happens in school)
Tell her that it's important to YOU that your child passes the class, and that you hope it's important to her, too. Let her know how hard A. is working every night and ask her what she would suggest before she gets too far behind-a tutor, help after class, etc. If enough parents let her know, she might realize the pace of her class is too fast and she needs to get more mastery before moving on. And at least you've given her a chance to speak her side. If that doesn't help, then go above her.

Mindy's comment, as a teacher, sounds really sensible. I suppose the teacher might become even less helpful and more defensive if the first she hears about complaints is from her superior. But family friendly blog or not she sounds like a real A-hole!!
